Ratalyacha Kees Recipe (Spicy Grated Sweet Potato)
Ratalyacha Kees – Learn how to make this simple yet healthy and filling Upwas Recipe.
Ratala i.e. रताळ in Marathi, रतालु in Gujarati and Sweet Potato in English is a root vegetable frequently used in Maharashtrian cuisine. Traditionally we prepare both sweet and savory dishes using Ratala . It is low in calories, contains complex carbohydrates, has loads of Beta Carotene and is rich in Vitamin A.
In Maharashtrian cuisine, Ratala is primarily used during fasts or upwas as we popularly refer to it. Whether it is the regular weekly fasts or special ones like Mahashivratri, Navratri, Ekadashi and Sankashti Chaturdashi. Ratala due to its high complex carbohydrate content keeps one full for a longer period and hence is quite popular. Traditionally in this recipe homemade ghee, grounded roasted peanuts, freshly grated coconut are also added . This makes the recipe balanced in carbohydrates, proteins and essential fats . Accompanied with curds and a slice of lemon it is a hearty breakfast dish which helps one to sustain till early evening when its time to break the fast.
I prepare Ratalyacha Kees as a part of my regular weekly breakfasts too and not just for Upwas.
In Marathi we have a saying “एकादशी आणि दुप्पट खाशी” which literally means that during a fast like Ekadashi, one ends up eating twice the amount of food than normal consumption rather than fasting. To avoid such a scenario in my personal Navratri fast coming up next week onward, I am planning to post a series of recipes I love to cook and eat during fast which keeps me full for twice a day while providing me with the right nutrients required by my body.

- Wash the Sweet Potato thoroughly to remove any dirt from them. I soak them in water for 15 minutes. Then wipe them clean and remove their skin or retain it if the skin is good and grate. The grated sweet potatoes should be kept in some water since it has a tendency to change color to grey/black
- In a thick bottomed pan, on a medium flame, add the ghee. After it heats up add Cumin, Chopped green chillies. Sautee for a minute. Now add the grated sweet potato and mix well. Cover and cook for 5- 10 minutes till steam starts escaping.
- Add the coarsely ground roasted peanut powder and salt. Mix well. The mixture should be dry after mixing. If it feels a bit sticky, increase the peanut powder TBSP wise. Cover and again cook for 5-10 minutes
- Garnish with grated fresh coconut, chopped coriander and serve with a piece of lemon
Curds along with the Ratalyacha Kees is a match made in heaven. Try serving together.
