Every kitchen has its essential elements. Most important one is the fresh local seasonal produce. This is mainly available in local vegetable and fruits wholesale market. Here we will be exploring Pune Vegetable Wholesale Market – Market Yard. But before that a small background on how I got interested into vegetable markets.
As a kid I used to accompany my mother to the various vegetable and fruits wholesale markets in Mumbai. The reward for a zero-naughtiness shopping which lasted for minimum two hours, was a big glass of sugarcane juice or a lassi topped with Malai (if we were near Dadar area).
My mom used to first go around the entire market, check the produce, rates and then start her shopping. Now, I understand her first round.
As I grew up, the colors, sights, smell, sounds of the food markets started charming me , I felt as if I was Alice in her Wonderland.
If you have ever been to the big food markets apart from vegetables, fruits, poultry, meats, fish you will also get to observe people from all walks of life very closely viz the farmers, the dealers, the drivers, the movers, the hoteliers, the small vendors, the individuals and so on.
Few months back, after many years, I once again was back to the big markets, but in Pune (my current homeland). I felt at home, I was a kid once again, with my mom whispering in my ears, go and have fun sweetheart, you are in your Disneyland.
The place is Pune’s wholesale vegetable market which provides fresh produce from the local farmers popularly known as Market Yard. It is one of the largest wholesale markets in Pune. We started in early morning on a Sunday to visit the market. It had a huge variety of Indian and Continental fruits and vegetables.
Few clicks from a morning well spent. I was back home after an eventful morning, inspired to try some experimental cooking with the usual and unusual veggies and fruits.
