Moh Moh Ke Dhaage

My current fav song is Moh Moh Ke Dhaage from the movie Dum Lagake Haisha. The thing which struck me the most is that the song shifts from Raag Yaman to Raag Puriya Dhanashree seamlessly and has a ठहराव not found in the songs these days. I know a lot of movie / popular songs based on Raag Yaman but I didn’t know any related to Puriya Dhanashree. This is what I thought until I heard a Rangeela song during a recent road trip . It left me amazed. Reason you will find in the Rangeela song listed below.

Thus began my quest for other movie/ popular songs based on Puriya Dhanashree. Before we move to the songs a brief introduction about this raag.

It is derived from the Purvi Thaat and contains all seven notes (Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni).

Re and Dha are Komal swaras in both Aroha and Avaroha, Ma is Teevra, rest are Shuddha Swar

It is a SandhiPrakasha Raag sung during the dusk (afternoon to evening) period or as we say in Marathi “diwe lavanichya wel” . Songs based on it are mostly of Shringar or Viraha ras.

Here is an attempt to list down songs I know which are based on Pooriya Dhanashree. I may be wrong given my limited knowledge of this raag so feel free to correct me.

Song 1: Ruk Jao Banavasi Ram from Sampoorna Ramayana (The music is by Vasant Desai, do see this movie for some excellent performances, classical songs and dance by Gopi Kishan)

Song 2: Tori Jay Jay Kartar from Baiju Bawara (Best Bollywood example of this raag, plays during movie credits)

Song 3:  Hai Raama Yeh Kya Hua Kyun Aise Humein Satane Lage… (Rangeela)

(I guess the notes are Sa Sa Sa Sa Re Ni Sa Ni Dha Ma Ma Dha Sa Sa Ni Re Sa Sa Ni Sa Ni Dha Ma)

First lines of Bandhish Payaliya Jhanakar mori, Jhanana Jhaana mori from Puriya Dhanashri is played in the start of the song, followed by beats and leading to this song. Now I appreciate this song all the more J

Song 4: Meri Sansoon ko jo Meheka rahi hai (Badalte Rishtey…one of my fav songs. I guess the notes are Sa Sa Pa Ga Ma Ga, Ga Re Ma Ga Re Sa Sa

Song 5: Kitane Dinon Ke baad hai aai sajana raat milan ki (All I know is Anuradha Paudwal sung it. Anyone remembers Avinash Wadhwan???)

Song 6 : Rut Aa Gayi Re, Rut Cha Gayi Re (I guess the notes are Pa Pa Pa Sa Sa, Re Sa Sa Sa Pa)…Pihu Pihu Papiha Bole Chal baug mein (I guess the notes Pa Pa Pa Pa Ma Pa Ma Ga Ma Ga Re Sa Ne Re Ga), note the beautiful usage of Pa

Song 7: Rang aur noor ki baarat ki kise pesh karun (I guess the notes are Ne Re Ga Ma Pa Pa Pa Ma Pa Dha Pa Dha Ma Pa)

Song 8 : Yaa chimanyanno parat phira re (Penned by Ga Di Ma, Music by Shrinivas Khale and sung by Lata Mangeshkar)

Song 9 : Dayaghana Ka tutale chimane gharate uralo bandi asa mi (Suresh Wadkar , music by Hridaynath Mangeshkar)

Song 10 : Jivalaga Rahile Ghar dur Majhe (Asha Bhosale , poetry by Shanta Shelke, music by Hridaynath Mangeshkar)

Song 11: Shabda Shabda Japun Thev Bakuli Chya phulaapari (Suman Kalyanpur). Bakul phulancha sugandha stays for a long time even after they fall down from the tree…very beautiful poetry by Mangesh Padgaokar
